Strawberry Letter: My Husband Has Lost His Mind

Let's call spade: It sounds like the mother hasn't done her job in raising a responsible daughter, but raised her to be spoiled and lazy and her husband isn't having it. I don't see anything wrong with the husband putting a foot in her daughter's behind to make her more responsible; it doesn't matter if she's an honor student that's involved in extracurriculars, she needs to learn responsibility. Boys are expected to be out on their own by 18, no later than 21, so the same should apply for girls. There are exceptions, but that's the general premise.

This is the problem: Girls are babied too much and grow up to be entitled women who feel a man is supposed to take care of them 24-7, then want to call themselves independent. The daughter doesn't get a pass just because she's an honor student and involved in school activities. This stepdaughter couldn't be my child because she WILL keep her room clean, period.

I don't buy the notion that he may have done something he wasn't supposed to the daughter, and that's why she rejected him and he's upset. If the husband did violate the stepdaughter in some way, then it's the mother's fault for marrying him because she (the mother) should have done her homework on this man before agreeing to marry him.

Steve does have a point in saying he can't treat her like a queen without her daughter getting the same treatment. Unless a man is willing to love a woman's kids as his own, it's best if he doesn't marry a single mother with children, because as soon as the stepdad tries to discipline, the mother will take issue.
